I'm very tired about hearing in the media scandals about people who are suppose to help run our country. Every few months we always have a politician that is getting into some kind of trouble. In the media right now they're talking about Blagojevich who is the governor of Illinois. Blagojevich was just arrested for trying to sell a seat in the senate and also trying to get a reporter fired from the Chicago Tribune for saying Blagojevich should be impeached.
This is unconstitutional because there is freedom of speech. This is also very sad because our new president elect, Barack Obama, is from there. He was only elected president a month ago and the governor of his state just got arrested. This is a great way for them to rain on Obama's parade.
It makes me so frustrated that this is going on in the media because these are the people that are running our country. This is why I don't trust the government. They say one thing, and then do another. They enforce rules that they don't obey. Chicago already has three governors that have been to prison. Politicians need to start being leaders.

Individual Blog Post #4
Something that I find very interesting about the media is that they're not very diverse. Most journalists are white and are men. I notice most stories that are positive are about men that are white.
The media rarely portrays women, different races, and disabled people. Along with that the media barely portrays old people. I think it's because of the media our society is the way that it is. People believe the stereotypes that they hear about black and hispanic people because of how they are portrayed in the media.
Disabled people are hardly ever portrayed in the media and that's why so many people don't know how to treat them just like normal human beings. I feel like if something is negative in the media it's usually about a minority.
I think the media needs to be more diverse in its stories. Now that we have president elect Barak Obama the media needs to change. The media needs to be more open to other people and their stories. It's through the media that we can start to change stereotypes so that our kids can grow up in a better society.

The economic downturn is on everyone’s minds and everyday more and more people are out of jobs. I notice in the media that they’re relating almost everything going on in America to the economic downturn. On almost every news channel there is a story on how to save money or on what people are doing now in this economic crisis.
Something I found interesting in the media is that a lot of women that are out of jobs are starting to look to brothel houses in Nevada, where prostitution is legal, to go and work. The Madame at the brothel house says they have never had so many people apply to work there. They even had to let go 30 percent of their workers and even had a 72-year-old woman apply. Since times are hard women are looking to other ways to get enough money to support their families.
The brothel houses are brining in more men but they have less money to spend. The women are independent contractors so they decide what they want to charge. Since times are hard they are taking whatever they can get.
It’s crazy to me how so many stories that are circulating through the media are just like the on the brothel house. They’re stories reminding us of how hard this economic crisis is affecting Americans.

Fish Out of Water
Fish Out of Water
Oktoberfest is a festival that lasts 16 days and originated in Germany. Oktoberfest is one of Germany’s main holidays and biggest events. Germans are known for Oktoberfest. During Oktoberfest the main thing to do is to drink beer, especially Marzen. Oktoberfest is a huge party for people to celebrate, drink beer, and eat. It’s actually known as the biggest fair bringing millions of visitors to Germany every year. Oktoberfest is also held in many cities such as San Francisco and Campbell.
I decided to go to Oktoberfest in Campbell because I have heard so much about it and because I wanted to know what Germans did as a holiday. Right when I got there all I could smell was delicious food. Above every tent I could see smoke rising from the air. By this I knew there must be lots of cooking going on.
As I walked into the area, there were just tons of people everywhere. The
place was jammed packed. I figured out that all the tents had hot dogs, polish sausages, and sour kraut. Their polish sausages were about nine inches long. There were also tents of beer everywhere. People were lining up for hours just to get beer and they even had souvenir mugs that you could purchase with the beer.
I was expecting to see a lot of German people there but since Campbell is such a diverse place, all types of people were there. There was a little bit of every culture and background here, which is very different from the Oktoberfest in Germany which mainly consists of mostly German people.
As an observer from a Vietnamese background I didn’t feel out of place at all. I went to Oktoberfest because I wanted to celebrate how the Germans do and I wanted to see what their holiday is all about. I know what Vietnamese New Year is about so I wanted to see what another culture’s holiday could be like. So I drank beer and had a polish dog, which by the way was absolutely amazing, and I partied with all the people around me.

Something I find in the media that is very interesting to me is all the promotion that they did on proposition 8 and what they're still doing on proposition 8. Proposition 8 passed and even though it passed there is still controversy everywhere in the media. There is even more controversy on propositon 8 than on our new president. I still go to places and see "no on prop 8" even though we already voted. I notice in the media they are still showing people that are protesting against proposition 8 like we are about to vote for it again.
Something I have also noticed is that now that we have Obama as our president I notice that when I look at magazines it's not just pictures of him on the cover, but instad every picture is a picture of his whole family. The media is trying to portray the "first family" and to get everyone adjusted to our new president. Everything in the news, magazines, and television is about Obama and what he did to get to his presidency.
Another thing in the media is how bad our economy is still doing, and when is this bailout going to start working. Now we not only have many well-known banks going bankrupt, but we also have a bunch of automotive companies that are about to go bankrupt.

The most interesting thing and important thing going on in the media to me would have to be the presidential elect of Barack Obama. I thought it was so great how the media covered the whole election including the debates and the countdown of all the electoral votes. The media portrayed both the candidates very well and put a lot of emphasis on getting all people to vote including young people. This year we had this biggest voter turnout and it makes me really proud to be an American when so many people want to get involved and make a change in our society. I felt so proud to make history this year by voting for the first African American president. I also liked how the media portrayed the excitement of other people around the world such as in Kenya. The media showed people of Kenya celebrating for Obama. They also showed people in Europe and Asia celebrating which makes me feel like the world is becoming more united and accepting.

Journal #3 NPR Radio Interview Analysis
I listened to the Fresh Air interview with Josh Brolin, playing the president, on Oct. 13, 2008. Before the interview, the interviewer knew that Josh Brolin was starring as George Bush in the new movie “W” by Oliver Stone. He is an Oscar winner for the movie, “No Country for Old Men.” He has also been in the movie “American Gangster” and “In the Valley of Elah.” He has been acting for 20 years, but it wasn’t until last year when “American Gangster” came out and he started getting noticed. Brolin’s father was also an actor. He was asked to be George Bush because they both did something their father did and grew up on a ranch. The interviewer asked not so much basic information but personal information about the movie. He asked if the role seemed risky and asked him what he has noticed about Bush that he hadn’t noticed before. He also asked about the demands of playing this role and exactly what his opinion is about Bush. I noticed the interviewer would follow up the questions by repeating some of the answers to clarify and while sounding conversational and then he would ask another question. I think the interviewer’s strategy is that he was conversational. He laughed and would give compliments so that Brolin felt more comfortable answering the questions. I noticed Brolin would laugh when inadequate questions were asked. I learned that the best interviews or not just a list of questions, but more of a conversation in question form. You have to make the person you interview feel comfortable and the only way to do that is to talk normally. Don’t be so serious.

Journal #4 Mystery Character
She is a flirty, spunky, and sassy 27 year old. She is also like a queen and an heiress. She has many different hairstyles but her hair is normally long and blonde. She is 5’8 which is the perfect height for modeling. She’s always strolling around with her hips moving from side to side with her little Chihuahua named Tinkerbelle. If you speak to her she will speak to you in a sassy valley girl accent and probably say to you, “that’s hot.” She is always wearing pink and she is always wearing something of a name brand such as Robert Cavalli or Louis Vuitton. She likes to wear dresses and if she is wearing a t-shirt it will say a phrase such as “that’s hot.” She is very honest and blunt. People love how she is so blunt and sassy. Some people make think she’s air-headed when she speaks since she sometimes has slow responses.

Journal #2 Media Audiences
I have decided to write about the news coverage of Obama being ahead when it comes to the first presidential debate. When it comes to the newspaper all the articles seem to have 10-15 short paragraphs. There were actually no sources quoted in this article. Instead as their source they used the polls that they had distributed for people to vote on whether McCain or Obama won the debate. The story is accompanied by photos of the presidential candidates in the debate and of the poll databases. There are three articles related to this article.
In television news the story is actually five minutes and eleven seconds. In a television news story there were about 4 sources quotes, most of them were actual interviews. The detail on newspapers doesn't even compare to the detail on television. In newspapers you can use words for details but the best way to show details is through pictures. In television they have pictures and actual footage. You can actually see peoples face remarks which makes a huge difference in your perception of what they say. On television I was able to actually see the candidates debate and see people reacting to it then just reading about it and creating my own visual. Television seems more accurate to me.
On the radio the story is only about 40 seconds long. I did not even hear a source quoted, it was just very fast and right to the point. Radio and television is similar because you can hear the tone of their voices. They are also very descriptive. I noticed that on the radio they use of lot of descriptive words to get their point across easier since they don't have any visuals to show. Radio and television are different because television is longer and has more sources. Radio stories use background sound and interviews to change the scene in the listener's mind by using more attention grabbing words and making everything more direct.

Telling Details
He doesn't even notice I'm home. His eyes are glued to the TV. His eyes are staring so hard into the TV screen that you can tell he is focused. Nothing is going to distract him. I hear the noise from his headphones because they are so loud. It sounds like bombing and screaming. Of course he is playing Call of Duty 4 on his XBOX. He makes no sounds unless he is yelling "Fuck," "Get Away," or "I planted it." He's in battle mode or as he calls it "clan" mode. His fingers are sweating to the controller. They have been so scrunched to the controller for such a long period of time that they even look like their cramping. His thumbs keep moving up and down and even his body starts to sway around. His fingers are just pounding the controller so fast that it makes me feel dizzy.I figure he actually feels like the character in the video game because he is moving around like it. During the pause period of the game he starts to just scratch his head in a thinking manner. You can tell he is thinking hard of what to plot next in the clan battle.

My Favorite Writing
The piece of writing that I absolutely enjoy would be song lyrics. I chose the song Bonnie and Clyde by Jay-Z and Beyonce. These lyrics could fit into multiple categories such as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. This writing appeals to me because it is a story written as a poem. This is an example of good writing because Jay-Z uses a wide variety of words, and some how gets them to connect and rhyme to each other, while still saying a story at the same time. If someone can write rhymes like that, then they're a very talented writer.

All About Me
My name is Stephanie. I am 22 years old and I'm a waitress at California Pizza Kitchen. I am currently a student at San Jose State and I'm majoring in Public Relations. I transferred to San Jose State from De Anza and this is my second semester. At this point in my life I'm probably the most focused I have ever been when it comes to school. Now that I'm taking classes that have to do with my career, I am more interested in them and I am more motivated to learn and do well. I'm looking to get a lot out of this class. In Public Relations most of your work is writing so I know this class will benefit me in many ways. I also want to broaden my vocabulary. When people have a wider range of vocabulary they automatically sound more intelligent.
When I'm not in school I'm either studying, or working out. I love to make time for my family, friends and boyfriend. I also love eating out because food is my favorite thing. I also love to make money. If I'm not working at California Pizza Kitchen I'm working for a promotional company or cock tailing in the city. I also scrapbook in my spare time. Lately I have been very interested in watching CNN and being updated with the current events going on in our society.
My ultimate main career goal is to one day be the host of E News. I just think that would be the best job ever. I also want to either work for an entertainment company or do crisis management.
